The Beatitudes –
Part Five: “‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied’ ‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied’ (Matthew chapter 5 verse 6)
There used to be a comedy sitcom based in Liverpool called simply, ‘Bread’. ‘Bread’ did not mean something you ate, it meant well-being, money, the wherewithal to live. Jesus wants to know if we are hungry for bread, and thirsty for drink. He says ‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven’ (John 6: 51). Jesus, the living bread, feeds those who hunger to be right with God, to walk with God, to live in relationship to the loving Father. Those who are hungry for God, are satisfied by the living bread- a relationship with Jesus.
Hungry people focus exclusively on their hunger, they have time for little else- they know their passionate need for food. Those blessed by God have become aware of the desperate hunger in their souls to be right with him and to know him and his love. Jesus is the bread of life which satisfies that hunger. Many people hunger after wealth, power, love, but the blessed ones are those who hunger for God. What are you most hungry for?
